Build for a private client - NOT for Sale

Located on Northwood Street in Houston, this project centered around transforming a traditional Spanish-style home whose original kitchen no longer supported the way the homeowners wanted to live. While the home had beautiful architectural character, the kitchen itself was small, enclosed by multiple walls, and separated from a breakfast area defined by a signature half-circle wall — a common feature in Spanish-style homes.
The goal of this renovation was to open the space while preserving the architectural identity of the home, creating a kitchen that feels both authentic and functional.
The original kitchen felt disconnected from the rest of the house. The enclosed walls limited light, restricted movement, and made the kitchen feel much smaller than it needed to be.
At the same time, the curved breakfast area wall presented both a design challenge and an opportunity. Rather than removing this distinctive architectural feature, the design focused on incorporating it into the new layout.
To transform the space, we carefully removed multiple interior walls to create an open-concept Custom kitchen while utilizing the existing curved wall as part of the new design. This allowed the space to maintain its Spanish character while dramatically improving functionality and flow.
The new layout introduced:
• A large central kitchen island designed for gathering and everyday use
• A full pantry wall for increased storage
• A functional mud station to improve organization
• A more natural connection between kitchen and living areas
The transformation allowed the kitchen to become a true centerpiece of the home.
Beyond the kitchen, this project included several major structural and interior improvements that elevated the entire main level of the home.
Work included:
• Removal and modification of structural walls
• New main floor flooring throughout
• Interior wall improvements and refinishing
• Construction of a custom circular staircase connecting the main floor to the second-floor entrance
• Updated finishes to support the new open layout
The new circular staircase became a defining architectural feature that adds both visual interest and improved circulation within the home.
Due to the structural nature of the layout changes, this project required detailed engineering plans and full city permitting.
DHY Texas Builders coordinated:
• Structural engineering plans
• City permits and approvals
• Construction execution
• Project management from planning through completion
Managing these technical elements was critical to ensuring the home was not only more beautiful, but also structurally sound and fully compliant.
What was once a small enclosed kitchen is now a bright, open gathering space that better reflects modern living while honoring the home's Spanish architectural roots.
The finished result delivers:
• Improved kitchen workflow
• Better natural light
• More storage and functionality
• Stronger architectural presence
• A seamless blend of old character and new design
This transformation demonstrates how thoughtful design and structural expertise can completely change how a home feels without losing its identity.
